Life. “Shall I Plant Sequoias…”
May 2024
This piece, part of a 3 part series, comes from John 14:6. It has less of a “story” and more of a “message”, so my commentary may look a little more like the journal I scribbled ideas into rather than a carefully written explanation...
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
Without Jesus how can we have LIFE? He IS life. No life that exists came into being without him- it only makes sense that life would be most fulfilled dwelling IN him.
In one of the books we read in my Creation Care & Environmental Stewardship class, this quote stood out to me and became the identity behind this piece: “It is the temptation to refuse to acknowledge our dependence upon God, to look elsewhere for our source of life, and to reject our identity as human beings and the children of God.”
Ephesians 2 tells the narrative of a people dead in sin, following the ways of the world, living in disobedience. “But because of his great love for us, God…” has given us LIFE. This is our narrative.
This piece depicts sequoia trees, stretching, reaching, flourishing in the light.
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
I could go more in depth, break it down further, and draw more connections- but I want this piece and the truth it represents to speak for itself.
